“A painter paints pictures on canvas. But musicians paint their pictures on silence.” ~Leopold Stokowski. The No Frills twins live up to this quote as they use their voices and bodies as forms of art. Both doe eyed, black haired girls deliver their outlandish and creative interpretations of previous artist’s songs on YouTube, adding in their own inspiration as it comes.
The group, No Frills Twins from Northern Rivers Australia, has attracted much attention on YouTube owing to their age, eccentric sense of style and unusual vocals. Eighteen year old twins, Vanessa and Arna Rogers draw their inspiration from artists such as Alanis Morissette, Lana Del Rey, Muse and Fleetwood mac. Having auditioned for X Factor Australia and not making it very far encouraged them to showcase their music on YouTube. They mainly enjoy recording covers and have performed songs like “Hallelujah” by Leonard Cohen and “We Can’t Stop” by Miley Cyrus. The covers are unlike any other, which is emphasized by their image, a mixture of gothic, hippie attire. They do also compose their own songs however which often include memories of their childhood or their close bond as twins. Their Loud, clashing outfits with hair done in knots atop their heads makes watching them a memorable experience. The unconventional twins prefer to not to restrict themselves to one particular genre and dabble in blues, pop, and rap.
The twins both have strong voices and a wide vocal range which enable them to achieve a balance between their own originality and the previous artist’s rendition. Through the process of transforming commercial songs they are able to form their own compositions such as their take on Hallelujah which reached a high of 20, 973 view. Although they are relatively undiscovered, with a modest following of 3964 subscribers on YouTube, they received much positive exposure with their short stint on X Factor Australia.
Commencing their careers at the young age of 10 they have received international recognition by bands such as Good Charlotte. Brothers Benji and Joel Madden who appeared on a KFC add campaign invited the twins, whilst in Australia, to a music studio after being impressed by the twins winning entry to a KFC song writing competition.
This up and coming group is worth a watch but not for the faint hearted. Their eclectic mix of multi sphered music covers a wide range of genres which antagonizes the mainstream grain. Their music attracts appeal from a wide range of individuals because of the versatility of their art form making them a refreshing group to follow.
