Jay Z Revives Pablo Picasso

By Heather Leigh Arends

Calling himself “The modern day Pablo”, Rapper Jay Z spends 6 hours in New York city gallery with other artists to create the art film titled Picasso Baby: A Performance Art Film

With the release of his latest album Magna Carta Holy Grail, Rapper Jay Z has added filmmaker to his resume’. For one of the hit tracks on the album called “Picasso Baby” Jay Z shows off his talent through the likes of a documentary like film instead of the regular plain on music video.

As stated in the film by Marina Abramovic, “Music is the most immaterial form of art”. Jay Z is showing the world that he is not just another rapper but rather an artist who deserves respect. The lyrics of the song display Jay’s true feelings on being an artist. The rapper expresses how he would like to be respected with reference to artists such as Pablo Picasso, Jean Michel Basquiat and Andy Warhol. The rappers exposes his ambitions of wanting to become a legend while he is still living as most artists are only acknowledged and respected for their work once they have passed on.

The film also shows the rappers respect for other art forms and other artists. As seen in the film a number of New Yorkers and some well known artist including poets, actors, dancers and other musicians were all gathered in the Pace Gallery in New York. Despite the actual film only being 10:46 minutes in length, Jay spent a sum of six hours in a room with these people using them as inspiration for his song Picasso Baby. Jay is placed in the middle of the room surrounded by many and as they approach him he feeds off their energy to make a new lyric.

Not only does this art film display the lyrical and artist talent of Jay Z, but also it allows the viewer to see art in the making. The viewer is exposed to a number of artists supporting each other and using each other as inspiration. There is a high level of respect shown in the film for the numerous artists present.

Since its release in July, Jay Z’s twelve studio album, Magna Carta Holy Grail has already reached platinum record sales and can possibly be called the rappers best album to date. There’s no stopping this man, soon we’ll be calling him a true legend.
