Wave of artistically entwined awesome, Alt-J

By: Nicole Milne

Alt-J’s newest CD, An Awesome Wave is pure art with poetic lines that engrosses the souls and minds of millions of fans. It is not all music and lyrics but instrumental sounds that put you on a high as you take in each and every word that is sung.

Alt-J is an English indie rock quartet which created one of the most iconic albums of 2012 ranking seventh in the world. Band members Joe Newman, Gwil Sainsbury, Thom Green and Gus Unger-Hamilton met at Leeds University in 2005, and have since been living and recording music in a basement in Cambridge.

Tessellate”, one of Alt-J’s first songs to be released off of their album An Awesome Wave illustrates their love and inspiration of the triangle which is the delta sign meaning change, as Rolling Stone Online states that the emotion and rock from the song is done through geometry of shapes such of the triangle. The delta sign is the bands brand and is what millions of fans know them by.

The most famous tracks to come of their album are “Taro”, “Tesselate”, “Dissolve Me” and “Breezeblocks”. Alt-J writes and composes all their music making it original. Taro  is one of Alt-J’s most famous songs as it has a lot of background meaning and passion to it. Gerda Taro was a photojournalist who died while photographing the war in Spain in 1937. Robert Capa, Taro’s love interest died during the First Indochina War, after stepping on a land mine. While being rushed to hospital he died with his camera in his hand. “Taro” is an idyllic track that captures the essence of love and the passion of photojournalism. The story is moving and the way that Alt-J performs it, is breathtaking.

One of the weaker songs off of the album An Awesome Wave is Fitzpleasure which is based on the gang rape of a girl called Tralala. The songs meaning is not too clear as whether the song shuns upon gang rape or glorifies it “Where we tent for our treasure, pleasure, leisure”.
