Justin Bieber: Where the worldwide obsession began

By Mistral de Robillard

The release of Justin Bieber’s debut album, My World, in November 2009 marked the beginning of a worldwide obsession. Bieber’s rapid rise to stardom began in 2008 when he was discovered by his present day manager, Scooter Braun, who found the singing sensation through videos posted on YouTube. The seven track extended debut playlist, My World, took the world by storm, making Bieber the first artist in history to have seven debut record songs reach the Billboard Hot 100. ‘It’s hardly a stretch to imagine Bieber racking up more hits in the next decade to come,’ Billboard.com reports.

In March 2010 Bieber’s first full length studio album, My World 2.0, was released. His single ‘Baby’ reached number one in several countries throughout the world causing ‘Beliebers’ everywhere to fall head over heels in love with ‘J Biebs.’ The singles: One Time, One Less Lonely Girl, Love me and Favourite Girl, earner Bieber worldwide success and recognition.

Bieber launched the My World Tour closely after the album release as well as the remix album for the acoustic version of the My World Album. In its first week of release the album sold over 137000 copies and by November 2010 had received a double platinum certification in Bieber’s home country, Canada. The United States as well as the United Kingdom platinum certified Bieber’s album in December of 2010.

While My World received mostly favourable reviews, various media publications were not in full favour of the album. According to Metacritic.com Rolling Stone Magazine commented on the album stating, ‘He’s 65 inches of pure love panther, with sensitive-man bangs and a voice like Joey McIntyre getting savagely beaten by the Auto Tune police.’ Similarly the All Music Guide commented that while the songs on Bieber’s album were not top quality, ‘the singer more than gets by on his squeaky-clean charm and natural ability.’
As a result of his albums success Bieber received the Artist of the Year award at the 2010 American music awards as well as a nomination best New Artist and Best Pop Vocal Album at the 53rd Grammy Awards. With over 27 million followers on Twitter, grade scholars on every continent declaring their love for him and announcing their terrifyingly serious intention to become his wife, it is no wonder that this talented teenage heart throb sensation has developed loyal followers who will undoubtedly ensure his musical success for years to come.
