Lyrics that stretch the mind to inexplicable, only self-understood dimensions, an atmosphere that causes your inner-most emotions to boil up from the depths of their hiding, and a synergy of musical elements that present a sound never created before.
This is what many might experience when listening to the music of the American Indie-Folk band, Bon Iver, specifically their new self-titled album, Bon Iver, Bon Iver.
Released in June of 2011, Bon Iver, Bon Iver has since achieved success in various charts around the globe. In Norway and Denmark, as well on the US Billboard Alternative, Independent and Rock Albums Charts, Bon Iver reached the No.1 spot. In Australia and on the US Billboard 200 Charts, the album just missed the top spot, having made No.2, while in countries like Belgium, Canada, Ireland, New Zealand and the United Kingdom, it has made it into the top 10 of these respective local charts.
After the success of Bon Iver?s first album For Emma, Forever Ago which was released in 2007, creator and author of the band, Justin Vernon, has quite daringly taken on a newer, more refined approach for the creation of Bon Iver, Bon Iver. While For Emma, Forever Ago had a strong acoustic, almost homey feel to it comprised mainly of guitar and vocals, Bon Iver, Bon Iver sees the exploration of extra sounds such as brass instruments, saxophones and some electronic pads being introduced.
The individual tracks in Bon Iver, Bon Iver each seem to tell their own story. The music is divided into perceivably arbitrary sections comprised of short pockets of musical ideas and motives, acting as episodes within each tale. These episodes mysteriously dissolve together to form beautiful narrated productions.
?Calgary?, arguably the cornerstone track of the album, exemplifies the unique style of music in Bon Iver, Bon Iver: the calm, serene falsetto voice of Vernon, doubled over accompaniment with synth sounds and a driving rhythm, increasing in tension until its climax, where after the music thins out into nothingness. The light, peaceful atmosphere that Bon Iver?s music generates is typical of the Indie genre category under which it falls.
The other tracks, each resembling a geographical location, include Perth, Minnesota, WI, Holocene, Towers, Michicant, Hinnom, TX, Wash., Lisbon, OH, and Beth/Rest.
So, for the meditative, deep and spiritual type, Bon Iver, Bon Iver is the apt choice for exploring a uniquely magical musical world.
