Go get HIM.
HIM or His Infernal Majesty is a Finnish ?Love Metal? rock band led by their lead vocalist, Ville Valo, who formed the group in 1991 while he was a teenager. They are entered into many genres including alternative rock and goth rock, but the band state that they are in their own genre, ?Love Metal?, coinciding with their 4th albums name. Their current lineup consists of Ville Valo, Mikko “Linde” Lindstr??m, Mikko “Mig??” Paananen, Janne “Burton” Puurtinen and Mika “Gas Lipstick” Karppine.
HIM have been on a one-way road to success since their debut album in 1996. They have released 7 complete albums ranging from Greatest Lovesongs Vol. 666 to Screamworks: Love in theory and practice. There have been many hits from their albums over time but most of them came from their album Dark Light in released in 1995.
Dark Light was the bands breakthrough album in the US (United States) debuting in the top 20 on the Billboard 200 while featuring two major hits, Killing Loneliness and Rip out the wings of a Butterfly, which made it into the top 10 in the UK (United Kingdom). This album pulled the band from almost anonymity around the world to having many of its albums chart in the US, Love Metal being included in these. This success has been coupled with many awards, having many Finnish EMMA awards for ?album? and ?band? of the year in 2001 and Platinum Europe award for ?sales across Europe for May? in 2004.
The album consists of 10 tracks with Killing Loneliness being the stand out track, however all the songs are of a high standard. Killing Loneliness has all the elements of a good track, it is gripping and you want to hear it again and again. Ville Valo?s voice being very soothing for this song and the musical work, especially the guitar, are all incorporated in a melody that keeps you listening. Their music is different, it isn?t heavy metal and it isn?t soft rock, it is in between, which is intriguing and the genre ?Love Metal? fits the bill perfectly.
Pascalene Houseman, an avid HIM fan stated that from the moment she heard ?Rip out the wings of a Butterfly?, the unique sounds of the guitar as well as the unusually dark setting, she was hooked. ?I saw this as a step away from the conformities that many people fell under when it came to music. Their oddities were eye-catching and they were simply different from everything. Not to mention the fact that their music had a way of burying itself into mind and heart, with lyrics that are utterly outstanding, creative and filled to the brim with emotions and experiences many of us have been through.?
I see the band as having a few more successful years but due to the ageing of the band members and appeal they have, I can?t see them progressing more than that. I feel that the musicians and especially the lead guitarist have a bright future. This album ?Dark Light? has opened my eyes to something I didn?t even know existed and I think I am definitely going to keep my eyes open, a great album with inspiring songs.
